“Tekstiil tänaval”
2024
How often do you notice art in the street scene? But how much of it is textile art? Do textiles fit into the street at all? It’s sensitive to weather, time and the human factor. But maybe that’s the charm?
It was with these questions in mind that the #street_bubbling textile project was born in Porto in spring 2024. These are mini-sculptures made of about 99% natural textiles, which are now located in different parts of the world, capturing people’s emotions and local ambient. A new look every day. All of this is captured on textiles, like in a fabric memory. Does nature take these artwork and grows them, or does human intervene? And what will become of the black bubble, which is of synthetic? A drop of tar in a honeypot… you know. Symbol of the bubble is, in its ambiguity, up to each individual to interpret.
As it is not physically possible to see their daily transformation in person, each sculpture was accompanied by a request for feedback from the street. This is a way to follow the evolution of the textile bubbles. About half a year on, this project can now be found in 13 different countries. You can follow it on Instagram @marinnooni. I wish that, over time, we could see more and more textile art in the urban street. Textiles on the street are very cool!
